What Students Will Experience During Their Field Trip

Students visiting Aviation Heritage Park & Museum explore aviation history through the stories of remarkable aviators whose achievements helped shape flight and space exploration.

One of the museum’s most fascinating artifacts is a NASA T-38 Talon trainer aircraft flown by every American astronaut who walked on the moon, including astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. Standing beside this historic jet gives students a direct connection to the Space Race and the early days of human spaceflight.

Throughout the museum, students discover the inspiring stories of aviators with strong ties to Southcentral Kentucky, including:

Willa Brown
First Black American woman to earn a commercial pilot’s license and a pioneering aviation educator.

General Dan Cherry
Former U.S. Air Force Thunderbird Chief and decorated combat fighter pilot.

General Joseph Ralston
Former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the most senior-ranking Airman ever from Kentucky.

Colonel Terry Wilcutt
NASA astronaut who flew four space missions and commanded two.

Through these exhibits and stories, students gain a deeper appreciation for the innovation, courage, and determination that have shaped aviation and space exploration.

A Field Trip Students Remember: "My students absolutely loved seeing the airplanes up close. It was the perfect field trip."
