A Touch of Home for the Troops at Aviation Heritage Park & Museum
As part of this year’s Duncan Hines Days festivities, the Aviation Heritage Park & Museum will present a special program honoring the spirit of service and support that sustained American troops during times of war.
On June 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., visitors are invited to experience “A Touch of Home for the Troops”, a living history-style event inspired by the American Red Cross volunteers affectionately known as the Donut Dollies.
During both World War II and the Vietnam War, these women served in forward areas and military installations, offering servicemen a much-needed connection to home. Through simple comforts—fresh donuts, coffee, conversation, and a friendly smile—they provided morale support in environments far removed from everyday life. Their presence brought moments of normalcy, kindness, and encouragement to those serving far from home.
At the museum, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the Donut Dollies’ role while enjoying tastings of wartime-inspired treats, including “war cake”—a resourceful dessert developed during rationing—and classic donuts reminiscent of those served to troops.
This event will take place at Aviation Heritage Park & Museum located on Three Springs Road in Bowling Green, KY. You’ll find the Dollies on the Museum front porch conveniently located close to the Pickleball Palooza happening next door on the adjacent courts, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for the community to gather, learn, and reflect.
Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
