DESCRIPTION:“The Ownership of the Ring”   \n\n\nCelebrated on the 50th Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War \n\n\nWHO:  Brigadier Gen. Dan Cherry\, USAF\, (Ret.) who shot down a N. Vietnamese fighter pilot\, Lt. Nguyen\, Hong My\, on April 16\, 1972 during the Vietnam War  \n\n\nWHAT:  “The Ownership of the Ring” – We will present the story behind the blue sapphire Mackin High School\, Washington D.C.\, Class of 1972 ring purchased in a Hanoi jewelry store in the 80’s by Hong My. After reuniting with Dan in 2008\, 36 years after the war ended\, Hong My gave the ring to Dan Cherry for safe keeping and to hopefully return to its rightful owner. Today’s event marks a custody ceremony to present the ring to Aviation Heritage Park where the ring will be placed in Dan’s Aviator exhibit case until the owner can be found. This is a Cinderella story of a ring in search of its owner which will bring the “My Enemy\, My Friend” story full circle. \n\n\nIn partnership with the Samuel Davies Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution and The American Legion Post 23\, Aviation Heritage Park will also announce on May 15th the kick-off of the Honor Rolls fall event and bus trip transporting veterans who fought in that war to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in the state capitol of Frankfort\, KY.  \n\n\nWHEN:  Thursday\, May 15\, 10 a.m.  (May 15\, 1975 was the final U.S. military involvement\, the Mayaguez Incident\, with the deaths of 38 Americans.) \n\n\nWHERE:  Aviation Heritage Park\, 1825 Three Springs Road\, Bowling Green\, KY  42104\, 270-421-4885 \n\n\nWHY:  A promise made between an enemy and then a friend to bring the class ring home to its original owner\, 50 years after the Vietnam War ended. \n\n\nFor more information contact Executive Director Bob Bubnis at Aviation Heritage Park and Museum.

SUMMARY:Operation El Dorado Canyon Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:The F-111 Aardvark in front of the Aviation Heritage Park is here to honor retired Colonel Arnie Franklin. A Bowling Green High School graduate in 1961 and WKU in 1966\, Franklin would serve in the Air Force as a command pilot with over 3\,500 flying hours\, with 782 logged in combat. He also served as a Commander of the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing\, was assigned at the Pentagon as Chief of the Middle East\, Africa\, South Asia Division\, a Professor at the Air War College\, and led the USAF portion of Operation El Dorado Canyon\, the US Strike on Libya on April 15\, 1986. \nThis exhibit comes from the private collection of Retired Colonel Franklin\, including many artifacts from his military career. He will be here to tell the story and answer questions about his life in the USAF and that history-making mission.

Col Wilcutt is a Logan County native and WKU graduate who served as the Commander on STS-106 Atlantis and STS-89 Endeavor. He was pilot on STS-68 Endeavour and STS-79 Atlantis. This event is free to the public. The museum will be open 10 am – 2 pm on Memorial Day.

DESCRIPTION:Satisfy your need for excitement at AHP’s Open Cockpit – Saturday\, Oct. 15\, 10 am -2 pm\, sponsored by PPG. \nAHP welcomes the public to have an up-close look at all the park warbirds. The cockpits will be open on all eight of the static displays for you to check out the perfectly restored interiors. Each will have a knowledgeable docent on hand discussing the aircraft and telling the stories of the pilots. Guest docents will include Brigadier General Dan Cherry\, pilot of Phantom 550 and Sgt Patrick O’Leary\, a former crew chief for HMX1. \nViewing platforms will be available for all the park aircraft. From this vantage\, park visitors can look inside Marine One\, the Panther\, Shooting Star\, Phantom 550\, Aardvark\, the UH1\, all owned (and regulated) by governmental agencies. Interested visitors may get into the Talon- flown by every astronaut who walked on the moon. The T-38 is owned by Warren County/Aviation Heritage Park. \nGet the camera ready when you climb up to see the Northrup T-38 Talon. You are invited to not only look but climb into the seat. The NASA trainer\, honoring local astronaut Terry Wilcutt\, was flown by all the astronauts who have ever walked on the moon. Additionally\, the pilots who have been in its seat include all 6 Mercury missions through 1963\, the 10 Gemini missions\, and the Apollo program. \nChaney’s Ice Cream and Cassady’s Real Smoke BBQ will be serving deliciousness on-site during the event.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free event  on Saturday\, April 16\, 2022\, 11 am – 2 pm at Aviation Heritage Park. It is the 50th anniversary of General Dan Cherry’s aerial victory over a MiG 21 in the skies over Vietnam. At noon the public are invited to a double treat. Step inside the new AHP museum to hear General Cherry relate his fascinating story about April 16\, 1972 as told in his book\, My Enemy\, My Friend. While inside guests may check out the museum building progress. \nFifty years ago\, on April 16\, 1972\, General Dan Cherry faced a North Vietnamese MiG 21 in the skies over Vietnam and emerged the victor. \nAfter taking off from a base in Thailand on April 16\, 1972\, Cherry was flying with three other Phantoms from the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing\, patrolling about 50 miles southwest of Hanoi. They were chasing two MiGs when they spotted a third lower down. Cherry and his wingman chased the third MiG into a cloud\, and spotted the North Vietnamese pilot when they emerged. \nSidewinder missiles malfunctioned repeatedly on both of the American planes\, but Cherry finally fired a Sparrow missile\, which hit the MiG about 4\,000 feet away. \n“The explosion blew the right wing of the MiG off and it immediately went into a hard spiral\, trailing fire and smoke\,” Cherry wrote. “The MiG pilot ejected and his chute opened right in front of me.” \nLittle did he know that he would be reunited with that pilot\, Nyugen Hong My\, on a Vietnamese television program in April of 2008. \nThere will be docents available to answer questions and relate aircraft and aviator stories in the park.
